Richard Bangs Adventures presented by Yahoo!

In Yahoo’s latest effort to bring original journalism to its audience, adventurer Richard Bangs is using photos, video and personal dispatches to share the plight of The Sea Gypsies of the Andaman Islands and show how they survived last year’s tsunami.

Last month Bangs reported on American John Harlin III’s ascent of the Eiger, the same Swiss peak that claimed the life of Harlin’s father 40 years earlier.

And next month, the site will chronicle the winning family of the Casio Richard Bangs Adventures sweepstakes as they follow the path of a centuries-old treasure hunt quest through the heart of Panama.

San Bernardino County Sun shines

Here’s a look at the San Bernardino County Sun’s online efforts, including the interactive special section called “Unnatural Disasters” that won a Digital Edge award this year. The section explored the relationships between fires, mudslides and flooding, and included Flash maps and online chats.

Newspaper posts offensive caption online

Craigslist.com founder Craig Newmark is working on a new media technology project aimed at helping people “find the most trusted versions of the more important stories,” he says. “This kind of technology is intended to preserve the best of existing journalistic practices, and should help retain newsroom jobs….It’s intended to complement, preserve, and grow existing media.”

MyPI integrates personalization

Many news sites have tried building personalized “My” subsites, where users could build a page of their favorite content from the publication. But generally they don’t work, because people don’t use them.

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer has taken the concept and integrated it into every page on the Web site.

Users can customize up to seven modules that will then appear on every page of the site in the right column.

According to Editor & Publisher, Mike Thompson, the PI’s online developer, implemented the feature in about three or four weeks.
