NYTimes.com using Google Maps to plot homicides

The New York Times obtained records for every murder in the city over the last three years and, to go with the story in the newspaper, plotted those homicides online on a map of NYC using Google Maps. Nice use of Google Maps.

A new report from a top media industry consultant says print magazines need to figure out how to use search engines to drive traffic to their online properties without losing value by letting all their content by “scraped” by search engines. The report says magazines should learn from the newspaper industry’s mistakes.
Reuters aligns with global blog site

Reuters is partnering with Harvard’s Global Voices Online, a blog aggregator that connects readers to blogs around the world, from Afghanistan to Zimbabwe. Reuters will make the blog content available on its own web sites, according to E&P.

Knight Foundation launches new media training center

The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation is launching a Knight New Media Center to offer training.
Funded in the first year with $650,000, the center will offer customized week-long “boot camps” in multimedia reporting for traditional print and broadcast journalists; and seminars for new media journalists to learn how to better cover specialized topics.
