News sites seek greater control of search

Leading news organizations and publishers have launched an effort to revise technology for restricting access to search engines. Sites, for instance, could try to limit how long search engines may retain copies in their indexes, or tell the crawler not to follow any of the links that appear within a Web page, according to The Associated Press, which is part of the consortium (for more details see this AP story, which ironically is hosted on Google).

Reuters using mobile journalism toolkit

A reporter will this week embark on an experiment to report the arrival of Tesco in the US with little more than a Nokia N95 mobile phone. The news agency has been using the “ journalism toolkit”, developed through close partnership with Nokia, for a couple of months now, but mostly to have TV reporters shoot video for the web - now a text reporter will file to the wire from LA and Las Vegas using the handset and a Bluetooth keyboard.

Citizen media site sued for libel

Chris Grotke and Lise LePage, co-founders and owners of iBrattleboro.com, a widely acclaimed citizen journalism site based in Brattleboro, Vermont, were sued on November 16 for libel based on a comment submitted by one of the site’s users, the Citizen Media Law Project reports. Read more »
