Student journalist Lindsay Toler recently appeared before millions of viewers on Dialogue, a China Central Television news program hosted by Yang Rui, the Larry King of China. The 21-year-old Dallas resident recently marked her 30th day of blogging from Beijing, just as an estimated 30,000 journalists from around the world are starting to arrive for the Summer Olympics. Three words: Access trumps experience. Five more: The messenger is the media.

Since 1980, Barbara Patton has cared for 147 children: Abused babies taken away from their parents, babies dropped off under California’s Safe Surrender law and babies with medical conditions that would intimidate the strongest of individuals. Reporter Tara Cuslidge and Photographer Ariel Zambelich traced her life for several months, ending in the adoption of her daughter, Angelina.
