WHAT: The Western Knight Center for Specialized Journalism is accepting applications for this expenses-paid forward-looking seminar that combines practical instruction in multimedia reporting and editing with in-depth exploration of topics critical to online news operations. Sessions will give participants specific hands-on instruction in computer-assisted reporting, as well as a variety of digital editing tools and multimedia applications, including digital video and Webcasting. Other segments will address creation of news Web sites, distributing news through a range of Internet platforms, managing news databases and understanding content management systems and emerging publishing protocols such as XML and NewsML. Discussion sessions will focus on the future of news, trends in convergence and usability issues. As a bonus, fellows will attend the annual Online Journalism Conference to be held March 14-15 and sponsored by the University of Southern California Annenberg School for Communication and the University of California, Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism. The theme of the conference this year is: "The Third Wave: Doing It Right."

WHO SHOULD APPLY? Print and broadcast reporters and editors who are preparing to make the transition into multi-media journalism and those professional journalists engaged in training for convergence.

WHAT'S INCLUDED? Fellowships cover lodging, meals, instruction and materials and one-half of travel to a maximum of $300.

HOW: Applications should be addressed: Vikki Porter, Director, The Western Knight Center for Specialized Journalism, USC Annenberg School for Communication, 3800 South Figueroa Street, Los Angeles, CA 90037-1206. Applications should include TWO copies each of: a resume; a 500-word statement of why this seminar would be valuable to the journalist; a supervisor's strong nominating letter agreeing to cover salary and nonfellowship expenses; and three published articles (editors may submit edited work, broadcast journalists send one audio tape or videotape not over 30 minutes.)
