Free course on Medicine in the Media

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is offering a free 3-day course for journalists that welcomes citizen journalist and blogger applicants.Medicine in the Media: The Challenge of Reporting on Medical Research is a 3-day training taught by medical research and health journalism experts. It is open to all journalists and bloggers who write about health or health care whose primary audience is the general public.

NIH just announced acceptance of applications for the June 24-27, 2009 Bethesda, Md course. The application deadline is January 30, 2009. The agenda and faculty list are still developing, but the 2008 course agenda and more information is available at http://medmediacourse.nih.gov.

Stressing an evidence-based approach and re-examining intuitive beliefs about medicine, the course will prepare participants for interpreting and evaluating research findings including statistics, selecting stories that hold meaningful messages for the public, and placing them in appropriate context.

There is no cost for the course and meals and lodging are provided.
