Just in time for the Olympics, here’s an excellent multimedia package from DallasNews.com, “The Double Arabian: A Very Dangerous Skill.” Dallas Morning News Photographer Smiley N. Pool wins a free Gmail account for his work on the project, and kudos also go out to DallasNews.com Multimedia Designer Karen Davis, DallasNews.com Sports Editor John Banks and Dallas Morning News Writer Cathy Harasta.
The package shows how U.S. Olympic gymnast Carly Patterson peforms the dazzling balance beam dismount known as the “double Arabian,” using a combination of sequential photos, video, audio and text. The photo sequence is especially impressive, because Patterson performs her dismount in about 5 seconds. To capture it, Pool fired his camera at the highest speed to produce the 34-frame sequence. The composite was created using Photoshop by layering 25 of the frames into one image. The multimedia package even includes audio of Pool describing how she did this.
