Interactive world maps of media coverage

World maps of media attention, publish on the blog L’Observatoire des Médias, purport to show the attention media organizations and blog paid to various parts of the world. Very interesting… though The Wall Street Journal says the underlying numbers are problematic.

Creating visual representations of news coverage would seem to be inherently difficult, adding another layer of complexity to good old text-based content analysis — subject itself to research design flaws.

The L’Observatoire project reminds me somewhat of Buzztracker, which shows the relative amount of coverage mentioning certain cities and the frequency with which separate cities are connected in media items. Check it out at http://www.buzztracker.org/
