Backfence

http://www.backfence.com/

Focusing on a specific town, each Backfence.com site will provide opportunities for people to share information with their neighbors and a place for everyone to comment on that information, bringing together the community's collective wisdom. It will be like talking with friends about the latest local news and information at a neighborhood gathering.

Backfence.com sites will be free for all to visit and use, supported by advertising from local businesses.

The first Backfence.com hyperlocal sites will be launched in Reston and McLean, Va., in Spring 2005, and Backfence then will roll out quickly to towns and cities across America.

Backfence.com is an excellent idea, but it also serves as a reminder why "citizen journalism" will never be taken seriously. For starters, there is a plethora of outdated info and plenty of redundant, boring photos. These type of sites must employ a decent editor - DON'T ACCEPT EVERYTHING THAT IS UPLOADED!!! And please, don't let the same yakkers tout their events and happenings a zillion different times, a billion different ways, in a million different places.
