Pioneer news site to shut down

The Nando Times, one of the first Web news sites, is going to shut down within the next three months. This is sad news, though it was inevitable.

The Nando Times launched in 1994 as an online news site focused on national and international news, even though it was run by a unit of The (Raleigh, N.C.) News & Observer. Shortly afterward, a related sports site, Nando SportServer, was launched.

For a while, they were among the leaders in their categories and a regular stop for online news junkies. But as national media organizations got savvy to the Web, Nando just couldn't compete, either in terms of traffic or quality of content. Last month the sites had just 400,000 visitors -- combined. (see how that compares to leading news sites' traffic)

McClatchy Co., which now owns Nando Media and The News & Observer, says the sites no longer fit into its increasingly local focus. The content will continue to be posted on McClathy's newspaper sites.

The sites long since lost their value as top news sites. But they should be remembered for the pioneering role they played in the online news industry's early years.
