Urban Warfare animation
Now that the fight has moved to Baghdad, sites are rolling out their interactive elements exploring the risky nature of urban combat. CNN.com posted a clickable graphic and paired it with a neat, though unnarrated, animation of what street fighting might be like. MSNBC.com updated a 4-minute-long documentary-style multimedia package on the dangers and challenges of urban warfare. Newsweek repurposed this impressive magazine graphic and added audio. The BBC took explanatory approach, creating a Flash package looking at what's involved in attacking a city and defending a house, plus includes a history of urban warfare.Apr 09, 2003 | E-MAIL | SAVE | PRINT | PERMALINK | DISCUSS(3)

3 comments about 'Urban Warfare animation'The graphics are a very impressive use of technology and I think they definitely increase knowledge of 'urban warfare'... but I also think they contribute to the "video game" feel of this war as depicted in the media. Graphics seem more like textbook learning -- accurate, but they don't really communicate the horror of urban warfare the way photos do. I liked the MSNBC slideshow but they could have labeled the photos better -- there was a Vietnam photo at the end of the Gulf War I section! Maybe a combo of graphics & photos is the best way to explain urban warfare from a news perspective...
