Nytimes.com drops left-side navigation

The New York Times Web site has dropped the left column navigation on article pages that most news sites use to help readers navigate around the site. This makes it a bit harder to move to another section after reading an article. "Scholars of hypertext systems have always emphasized the need for a clear and consistent navigation system; this change suggests that New York Times Digital's designers have concluded that this is no longer necessary -- or at least, not as important as other goals," writes Rich Gordan in E-Media Tidbits.
