Do journalists' contracts stymie good ethics?
Author and former TV journalist Chris Shumway posts an interesting question on CyberJournalist.net in response to the debate over The Hartford Courant's decision to shut a reporter's blog. "What if a media worker uses his/her weblog to expose the employer's conflict of interest or ethical lapses?" he asks. "Isn't it ethical to expose conflicts of interest in the profession--conflicts that undermine public trust? The SPJ code of ethics states that journalists should, 'Expose unethical practices of journalists and the news media.'"…So, a well known organization's code of ethics says it's right to expose unethical practices, but many reporters work under contracts that forbid such behavior. What the hell kind of environment is that for journalism?"
