Times reporter shoots, narrates slideshow
New York Times photographers have been producing award-winning narrated slide shows for more than a year, and now science reporter Andrew C. Revkin has joined in the fun. Not only did Revkin file a story from the North Pole about a major new observatory there, but he shot strong photographs himself and produced a narrated slideshow describing his assignment. Revkin also answered reader questions in a live chat from the North Pole.Try reading his 2,000-word article online (reprinted from the newspaper) and then watching the narrated slideshow -- and you'll find it's obvious which form works better on the Web in this case. Reading the text article one must scroll 2-3 screens before getting a good feel for what the story is about. Watching the slideshow one is drawn in immediately, and Revkin's chatty style and snapshots give one the feeling they're listening to a friend describing -- and showing pictures from -- their recent trip.
