New form of journalism in S. Korea

Three-year-old South Korean Internet news service Ohmynews is creating a new form of journalism, where the public reports on everything from local happenings to national politics. More than 26,300 readers have registered to be citizen reporters and they write about 200 stories each day, according to The Associated Press.

"With Ohmynews, we wanted to say goodbye to 20th century journalism where people only saw things through the eyes of the mainstream, conservative media," its editor and founder, Oh Yeon-ho, told The Associated Press. "Our main concept is every citizen can be a reporter. We put everything out there and people judge the truth for themselves."

Some have raised concerned about the accuracy and objectivity of its reporting, but only two stories have led to defamation cases and all stories are fact checked and edited by professional journalists before being posted online, he said.

Read by an estimated 1.2 million people daily, the site raised eyebrows last year when it was the only publication to report about two schoolgirls being crushed to to death by a U. S. Army armored vehicle on patrol, leading to a series of demonstrations (more on this).

Dan Gillmor says the citizen-reporters cover the usual subjects you'll find in newspapers, but tend to focus "more on personally oriented issues like education, job conditions and the environment. "OhmyNews is transforming the 20th century's journalism-as-lecture model, where organizations tell the audience what the news is and the audience either buys it or doesn't, into something vastly more bottom-up, interactive and democratic," he says.
