Google News wins Webby
First Deep Blue beat Gary Kasparov, and now a 'bot has beaten human journalists. Google News, the news site run entirely by computer algorithms, beat out BBC News Online, MSNBC.com, Poynter's Romenesko and allAfrica.com to win 2003 Webby Award for best news site. (Complete list of winners is here.)There's still hope for humans, though. The People's Choice Webby Award for best news site -- chosen by Internet users who voted -- went to BBC News Online. The people have spoken!
What this really means is that the Webby judges decided that the collective work of all the world's media is more valuable than any individual publication. Hard to argue with that.
