Seattletimes.com: You Build It

Seattle city officials have been struggling with the area's transportation future, so The Seattle Times created an online game that lets readers try their hand at mapping it themselves. Using a similar calculator format to the budget builder the site published about a year ago, readers got to decide what projects are most important to them and how much they're willing to pay. A clever approach to helping readers better understand this complicated subject -- and a nice way to reuse an interactive game format already created.

The project turned out even better than expected. After more than 2,000 people filled out the form, an analysis The Times published showed that people who responded were actually willing to fund packages that were larger than the regional transportation board had proposed – and that they favored taxes on gas and cars rather than a large state sales tax. In light of that, the regional transportation board changed their plan and lowered the proposed sales tax increase.
