BBC dominates European Online Journalism Awards

For the second year in a row, BBC News Online has dominated the European Online Journalism Awards, winning eight of the 21 prizes in the 2003 awards. Barcelona's Lamalla.net won Best Overall Journalism Service amd Prague's Transitions Online won the Best Innovation in Online Journalism category.

A number of individual journalists did outstanding work worth mentioning. The prize for Internet Journalist of the Year went to Vincent Landon, science correspondent of Swiss Radio International, for "The Malaria Business" -- "a remarkable investigation of a largely neglected story--the devastating impact of malaria on the health of children in developing countries."

Dr. David Whitehouse, the BBC's science correspondent, won for the Best News Story Broken on the Net ("Space rock on collision course") -- and has now won awards for four years running. And the Outstanding Contribution to Online Journalism in Europe award went to Mike Smartt, editor-in-chief of BBC News Interactive.
