Boston Globe: Telling readers how its done
A Boston Globe investigation of traffic tickets and warnings in Massachusetts shows differences in race, sex and age in who gets a fine and break for the same offenses. The excellent package include three good online extras: a Q & A with Secretary of Public Safety Edward A. Flynn; an online chat (and then transcript) with reporter Bill Dedman; and a fascinating, detailed report how the Globe analyzed hundreds of thousands of traffic tickets. Kudos in particular for using the Web to tell readers how a complex investigation was done (though one wonders why it was posted in a PDF format when an HTML page would be much more readable online -- see "PDF: Unfit for human consumption"). More news organizations should consider doing so.Jul 23, 2003 | E-MAIL | SAVE | PRINT | PERMALINK | DISCUSS(0)
