'Blackout blogs' come to news sites' rescue!

The blackout interrupted the Northeast-based hosting facility for Advance Internet's local Web sites, including al.com, cleveland.com, MassLive.com, MLive.com, NJ.com, NOLA.com, OregonLive.com, PennLive.com, SILive.com, and Syracuse.com.

So what did the company do? It set up 11 blogs -- one for each publication, plus one for the company -- that continually updated users on the latest information. What a brilliant idea!

Visitors to the sites got this message: "We are working to remedy this situation as soon as possible. In the meantime, please click below for special local news and information weblogs."

Here are the blogs:
»al.com
»cleveland.com
» MassLive.com
» MLive.com
» NJ.com
» NOLA.com
» OregonLive.com
» PennLive.com
» SILive.com
» Syracuse.com
» Advance Internet's Blackout Blog

"Let the record show that weblogs were handy -- no, critical -- to our news operation in the aftermath of the Great Blackout," says Advance.net president Jeff Jarvis. "...Weblogging is, after all, just the product of the world's easiest, fastest, cheapest publishing tool connected to the history's best distribution network and it works even for the big boys."
