'We Media' report published

New Directions for News has releasted a new report on participatory journalism entitled, "We Media: How audiences are shaping the future of news and information," written by Shayne Bowman and Chris Willis. The report begins with an explanation and brief history of participatory journalism; includes examples of how it is taking form; and argues why it is important for news organizations to build new relationships with their audiences. The final chapter highlights some of the ways media companies could adopt participatory journalism practices:
• Make your newsroom responsive to change;
• Give your staff some level of autonomy;
• Embrace the audience as a valued partner;
• Embrace customers as innovators;
• Don 't own the story. Share the story.
