BBC Online launches iCan beta
The BBC has launched a "beta" version of iCan, a new Web site aimed at turning ordinary citizens into grassroots political activists. "iCan is a new BBC service which aims to help people start doing something about issues in their life," the site says. "You can find advice, inspiration, and a growing number of people able to help you."According to reports earlier this year, iCan members learn how to set up public meetings, lobby representatives and voice grievances. The BBC also hopes to mine the site, so six BBC news reporters will watch the system closely for potential stories for television and radio.
The site is sparse so far, but promises to make available in the next few days answers to frequently asked questions and a quick step-by-step tour. The site doesn't officially launch till Nov. 3. Stay tuned -- this ought to be very interesting.
