Great work on dying tribal tongues

Great multimedia work is done at newspapers of all sizes. The (Fargo, N.D.) Forum -- recent winner of the APME Convergence award -- has produced an excellent multimedia project, "Dying Tongues," on how the languages of several tribes are fading into silence as fluent elderly speakers die. "The best parts, in my humble opinion, are the interactive timeline and language lessons at the top," Carole Tarrant, the managing editor, told Ken Sands for the APME Update. "We put a lot of info online that never made it to print, including an ancient myth from each tribe. The Mandan myth, 'Coyote Turns Buffalo,'' has a link so you can hear the first graph of it spoken in the Mandan language. The timeline also has a link to old recordings of tribal songs."
