AOL's localized political coverage plans
AOL will be launching a new Election Guide in January 2004 that will be intensely local. When a member enters his or her Zip code, a new page will be generated on the fly, pulling information from a series of databases and XML feeds from CNN and The Associated Press, among others, reports Susan Mernit in The Digital Edge. The new Election Guide will also offer MeetUp.com-like capabilities to find, register for and receive reminders about real-world events, political blogs written by members and local commentators, and links to local political action groups and state-by-state political message boards, she says. AOL’s products’ team is also preparing animated “Expressions” — Buddy List and AIM icons of the candidates — that AOL 9.0 members can add to their chat applications.
