Snow galleries: Readers vs. pros

As a major snow storm hit the Seattle area today, both The Seattle Times and The Seattle Post-Intelligencer went all out with exhaustive coverage online, and both did an excellent job. It's interesting to compare the two approaches. Both sites did an excellent job incorporating reader comments. The Times involved published a Snow Storm Blog with accounts of the storm from users, plus occasional updates on closures and other storm-related news. The P-I, meanwhile, used its comment-board technology to let readers post their experiences, and even led the site with a link to the page.

As for photos, The Times chose to publish a Reader Photo Gallery, while The P-I took a more traditional approach, with a high-quality photo gallery shot by staff photographers.

The reader photo gallery is a great idea, but this one is missing the type of candid, personal photos that make such features special.
