Blogging the primary with a camera phone

As news sites gear up for election coverage, The Spokesman-Review in Spokane, Washington, is sending a reporter all the way across the country (literally!) to New Hampshire for a week to cover the primary, equipped with a Treo 600 camera phone. We hope he can send photos for his "Spin Control" blog," says Ken Sands, managing editor of online and new media for spokesman.com. "But first, we have to figure out how to send and receive data and photos while "roaming" away from home."

Spokesman.com, meanwhile, continues to add Weblogs, launching three more in the past week and planning two more, Sands says.

"Ask the Editor" is an interesting blog building on the Dallas Morning News' editorial board Weblog idea. Five top editors will answer questions from readers about what we do, why, and how, in this online column.

"Eye on Boise." Last year the paper started a Weblog tracking Washington state politics, and it was so successful it is adding one for Idaho politics.

"EWU sports." A senior journalism student at Eastern Washington University is getting internship credit for producing a blog on the mens' basketball team, which will compete for a top spot in the Big Sky Conference.

The paper has two others in the works:

"Treasure Hunting." A correspondent who writes a weekly antiquing/garage sale column will have a running dialog with readers online.

"Unnamed Conservative Column." "We have a columnist and editorial writer who is a conservative Christian." Sands says. "He also scans the Web daily. He's going to provide our readers with notes on interesting finds that relate to his take on the world. "

Sands also says he's compiling a list of about a dozen interesting local bloggers. "We plan to build a page that profiles each of them and links to them. Here's a sneak peak at one of them. Blogger Brandon took a picture of his friend Lynn, who was asleep on her boyfriend's shoulder and drooling. (He points out the drool with a little photo editing.) I've got other, more serious opinion bloggers I'm looking at, too, but this one is a fun and entertaining look at the life of a college student."

Sites looking to develop a blogging strategy would do well to take a look at spokesman.com -- the site is among the best.
