How the Kerry affair rumor spread
Philedelphia Inquirer's Dick Polman does a great job of examining how Drudge's John Kerry affair rumor made it's way across the Internet and into the mainstream press -- and points out that most of the mainstream media handled the story fairly responsibliy, waiting for some meaningful information before running with the story, rather than just recycling unsubstantiated rumor.
Tom Rosenstiel, who runs the nonpartisan Project for Excellence in Journalism, said that more sordid Web rumors would probably plague the '04 campaign, because "there are more outlets with low standards. If a rumor is 'out there,' that's enough justification to cover it."
