Major Journalism Awards
Here is a list of the major journalism awards:
- American Institute of Biological Science (AIBS) Media Awards: Recognizes outstanding reporting on research in biology.
- APMEOnline Convergence Award: This award recognizes the effective interplay between a story in print and the same story online.
- ASNE Awards: Writing, reporting, diversity, photojournalism and leadership awards. Deadline: Feb. 1.

ASNE Editorial Leadership Award: "To recognize a leader who has made a major difference on behalf of an American newspaper." Deadline: Feb. 1.
- Atlantic Journalism Awards: Recognizes journalistic excellence and achievement in print and electronic news media in Atlantic Canada. Deadline: January.
- Best in Business Awards: Society of American Business Writers and Editors gives awards for breaking news and enterprise journalism to daily newspapers, business weeklies, wire services and online sites.
- British Columbia Newspaper Awards: Run by the Vancouver Press Club foundation.
- Clarion Awards: General awards that cover everything, from magazines and newspapers to TV and online. From the Association for Women in Communications.
- David Barr Award: A social justice award for students.
- Digital Edge Awards: New media awards from the Newspaper Association of America�s New Media Federation.
- Dorothea Lange-Paul Taylor Prize: A $10,000 award given annually by the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University to encourage collaboration between documentary writers and photographers.
- DuPont Awards: Administered by Columbia University and probably the most prestigious awards in broadcast journalism.
- Eisenstaedt Awards: For excellence in magazine photography.
- Eppys: Editor & Publisher's awards for the best newspaper interactive services and projects.
- George Foster Peabody Awards: For outstanding achievement in broadcasting and cable, though open to entries produced for alternative distribution, including educational, home-video release and CD-ROM.
- George Munster Journalism Awards: Awarded by the Australian Centre for Independent Journalism.
- Heywood Broun Award: A social justice award, intended to encourage and recognize individual journalistic achievement by members of the working media, particularly if it helps right a wrong or correct an injustice.
- Hillman Awards: Presented by UNITE (Union of Needletrades, Industrial and Textile Employees) to journalists, writers and public figures who pursue social justice and public policy for the common good. Deadline: January.
- International Consortium of Investigative Journalists Prize: A $20,000 prize open to any professional journalist or team of journalists of any nationality working in any medium. The investigation - either a single work or a single-subject series - must involve reporting in at least two countries on a topic of world significance.
- IRE Awards for Investigative Reporting: Recognizes outstanding investigative work in nearly every medium. Deadline: January.
- Livingston Awards: $10,000 for excellence by professionals under the age of 35 in broadcast, print or online journalism. Deadline: February.
- Lorenzo Natali Prize for Journalism: The Lorenzo Natali Prize is awarded to print and/or on-line journalists who have demonstrated a striking insight and particular dedication to the reporting of human rights issues within the context of the development process.
- Los Angeles Press Club Journalism Awards: Regional competition.
- National Headliner Awards: Individual awards of $1,500 to four Headliner Award winners whose work is recognized by the judges as "Best of Show" in the Print, Television, Radio and Photography.
- National Newspaper Awards: Canada's premier journalism awards since 1949.
- National Press Club Freedom of the Press Awards: To recognize journalists who have, through the publishing or broadcasting of news, promoted or helped to protect the freedom of the press.
- National Press Club Online Journalism Awards: Categories for best online journalism site and distinguished contribution online. $1,000 prize for each category.
- National Press Photographers Association Best of Photojournalism: Includes Best of Picture Editing and Best of Photojournalism on the Web categories. Deadline: Feb. 15.
- NetMedia Online Journalism Awards: Open to European online journalists and news sites.
- ONA Online Journalism Awards: The most extensive online journalism awards, presented each fall by the Online News Association and the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. Deadline: June/July.
- Payne Awards for Ethics in Journalism: To honor "the journalist of integrity and character who reports with insight and clarity in the face of political or economic pressures." For students, professionals and news organizations.
- Polk Awards: Long Island University awards for investigative journalism. Categories vary each year but everything is considered. Deadline: January.
- Pulitzer Prizes: The big awards for newspapers, literature, drama, music.
- RIAS Radio, TV and New Media Awards: Up to $10,000 awarded for excellence in reporting on German/American issues.
- RTNDA Edward R. Murrow Awards: Broadcast awards from the Radio and Television News Directors Association; includes categories for outstanding Web sites.
- Ruben Salazar Journalism Awards: Presented by the California Chicano New Media Association for work published or broadcast in California that contributes to a better understanding of Latinos in the United States.
- SND.ies: Society of News Design's monthly Best of New Media Design Competition.
- South Asian Journalists Association (SAJA) Journalism Awards: The annual SAJA contest has 11 categories, including print, broadcast, new media, photography, commentary & student work. Deadline: April.
- Scripps Howard Foundation National Journalism Awards: Recognize excellence in 18 categories, including editorial writing, human interest writing, environmental and public service reporting, business/economics reporting, commentary, photojournalism, electronic journalism, college cartooning, Internet reporting and editorial cartooning.
- SPJ Mark of Excellence: The Society of Professional Journalists' awards for the best in student journalism.
- SPJ Regional Awards: Awards in most states.
- SPJ Sigma Delta Chi: The Society of Professional Journalists' national awards, covering a range of categories for nearly every medium.
- Stokes Award for Energy Writing: National Press Foundation's annual $1,000 prize for energy writing.
- Women's Economic Round Table: Entrepreneurship journalism prize.
