Times' interviews with Candidates
The New York Times editorial board met with Sen. John Edwards on Feb. 23, but rather than just use that information to write an editorial, the newspaper's Web site posted video clips from the interview.
WashingtonPost.com has posted audio from similar interviews with candidates in the past on its Web site.
News organizations that get exclusive interviews should leverage that as best they can, as The Post has been doing and the The Times' has done here. If a conversation is on the record, there's no reason to hold back the information from the public -- although at times it may be preferable to audio tape an interview so the candidate acts more natural rather than just speaking to the camera.
UPDATE (2/25):
On Wednesday, The Times posted a similar video interview with Sen. John Kerry.
New organizations should also make sure to give candidates equal attention when posting video or audio of such interviews, as The Times has done.
