Doug Clifton on blogging

Doug Clifton, editor of the Cleveland Plain Dealer and the first major metropolitan newspaper editor to start blogging, says his Weblog has forced him to look at the paper more critically.

He says his blog is different from his column because "a column needs to cross a threshold of significance that a blog does not. If I tackled the routine kinds of questions many readers ask in a column, I would be writing one several times a week and diminishing their impact. The blog encourages spontaneity. It's more conversations. And readers respond more quickly."

And he offers this advice to editors contemplating starting blogs: "Ask yourself if you are sufficiently committed to the concept because it can be a burden. But weigh that against the advantage that comes from looking at the paper with a more critical eye."
