Great Blackmun papers coverage
When a news organization gets exclusive access to information, it should do everything it can to take advantage of that and make as much in-depth material available online as possible. NPR and The New York Times were granted advanced access to the accumulated papers of Supreme Court Justice Harry Blackmun before their release last week and both did an impressive job of handling the stories online.
NPR.org's package included a dozen audio clips from Blackmun's oral history; video clips of him discussing his 'Roe v. Wade' ruling and his life in the court; and a photo gallery of documents from files.
The New York Times, meanwhile, put together an interactive feature including timelines and several narrated slide shows in which court reporter Linda Greenhouse discusses his life.
And, in a great example of convergence, both NPR.org and nytimes.com cross-linked to each others' packages online. Between the two packages, you can hear Blackmun's perspective first-hand and get an expert journalists analysis.
