Topix.net: A local Google News
Topix.net takes the idea of news aggregation one step further than sites like Google News and 1stHeadlines.com, categorizing news stories on the Web into more than 150,000 pages. The site needs some work, but it has great potential and could be a great reporting resource.
Topix.net is by no means perfect. The pages don't always have the most important or the most recent stories on a topic at the top. And you're bound to find examples of stories that really don't belong on a topic's page but ended up there because of a keyword match.
For example, Topix.net's Seattle page doesn't even come close to matching the sites of The Seattle Times or The Seattle Post-Intelligencer in terms of timeliness or the selection of the most important stories.
If the technology improves, sites like this could present a threat to local newspapers or niche publications, as they offer the advantage of presenting top headlines from a variety of media sources -- rather just one -- in one complete package.
News organizations should keep an eye on evolving technologies like Topix.net, because they are bound to change the way our audiences get their news. And for reporters wanting to quickly scan headlines on a very narrow topic, Topix.net is hard to beat.
