Reuters to limit free Web news
Interesting move by Reuters: The company is limiting the amount of content that will be available for free on the Web. Rather than sell its content to sites like Yahoo and CBS Marketwatch for a licensing fee, Reuters will instead move to a headline service where readers will have to click to read the full stories on Reuters.com. Eventually, some of that content will only be available to subscribers.
Reuters content will certainly become a lot less ubiquitous online. Why would it do this? Partially to avoid weakening the value of the company's subscription products. But the company must also have faith that the ad market is improving enough to offset the losses it will likely take in marketing revenue.
