MarketWatch's Larry Kramer on Google News: 'Just not journalism'

ATLANTA -- The audience here let out a loud round of applause when washingtonpost.com beat out Google News in the EPpy Best Internet News Service over 1 million monthly visitors category.

But the real buzz came after MarketWatch.com President and CEO Larry Kramer addressed the crowd after being awarded his 2004 EPpy for Outstanding Individual Achievement by Editor & Publisher and Mediaweek magazines at the Interactive Media Conference & Trade Show.

Kramer said he was disappointed to see Google News as a finalist in the category and that Google News "is just not journalism."

"That's like nominating the yellow pages for a National Magazine Award," he said. "....Shame on you guys."

Kramer emphasized that journalists have "a responsiblity to provide the right filters."

"Google can't give you context," he said. "It can't check facts."
