Indianapolis Eye: Award finalist after publication dies

It's always sad when a bold experiment in online journalism dies. Unless you're from Indianapolis you might not be familiar with the Indianapolis Eye, which suspended operations in February after two years.

"Since November 2002, we have conducted an experiment in urban journalism that resulted in the Indianapolis Eye On-Line Magazine. We believed that Indianapolis, a city built on competition and a progressive, literary spirit, would benefit from a locally owned, probing, accurate and fair news magazine. We felt that the Eye would be the next wave of American journalism, the TIME or Newsweek aimed at an urban area along with a sharply designed Web site.... While our journalistic efforts were met with widespread critical acclaim and we were able to publish some of Indiana's top writers, photographers, designers and commentators, what we weren't able to do was attract the capital needed to move to the next critical step, which was to take the www.indianapoliseye.com Web site and turn it into a weekly print magazine capable of making a profit."

Despite that, in its short life the site had an impact, and that was recognized recently when it was named as a finalist for an IRE award, for its investigative report, "Too Little Too Late." The story reported on how an Indianapolis company had raised nearly $200,000 selling patriotic posters nationally to raise money for victims of 9/11, but the money hadn't been donated. According to IRE, after this story was published, the Attorney General's office conducted an investigation and the money was finally donated to the appropriate charities.

How ironic that, months after the publication ceases, it wins an award for an article titled, "Too Little Too Late."
