Net breaks Rev. Moon story

A slew of congressmen attended a reception earlier this year in a Senate office building in which Rev. Sun Myung Moon was honored and crowned and then declared himself the Messiah.

The story appears to have been broken online first by John Gorenfeld in The Gadflyer, and then picked up steam as scores of bloggers began talking about it (including Gornefeld on his own blog). Gorenfeld then wrote about it for Salon.

Very scary video from the Unification Church of the coronation has since been posted online.

And lo and behold, the story ended up on the front page of today's Washington Post (with credit given to Gorenfeld for breaking it).

This is one of the biggest stories independent online journalists have had an impact on since the Trent Lott affair.

Gorenfeld -- a professional free-lance journalist -- was able to use the Web to get out an important story that mainstream media had missed. Excellent work.
