A Scene from the Ice Age

New York Times reporter Andrew Revkin continues doing compelling multimedia work. He's now not only shooting photos and recording audio -- he's moved on to video and blogging.

In his latest trip, Andrew C. Revkin headed north to chronicle the shifts on Greenland and researchers' efforts to understand them. He periodically posted dispatches in a blog-like diary and also shot video himself.

Here's what he had to say about using these new formats:

"I shot about 7 hours of digital video (some with clip-on wireless mics, which are a pain, but great in high winds). The goal was to do short segments for NY Times cable TV channel (Discovery/Times), but they didn't use it (for complicated reasons having to do with Discovery partners).

"But one of the NYT TV editors worked with me to edit down those three one-minute segments.

"Video really is great for capturing subtleties, like the Swiss scientist scraping ice off the top of the bread-making machine. Still pix and audio just can't capture some things.

"The other interesting variant this time was the bloggish daily "postcards" I filed.

"There's still nervousness at The Times about this kind of informal filing, which didn't go thru a news editor but straight to the Web editors. But it was great fun to write, more New Yorker-ish, more personal....

"The key to what I'm saying... is that every medium has unique attributes and can enrich the overall picture presented in a news report."

Here's CyberJournalist.net's Q&A interview with Revkin from earlier this year...
