Backyard Blog election project
The Seattle Times is launching a "Backyard Blog" grass-roots campaign coverage effort for the election, in which it will give contributors it selects blogs on seattletimes.com and even occassionally include their content in the newspaper.
This is a FANTASTIC idea.
Oddly, they're only looking for contributors 35 and younger. They're also not just looking for local contributors, but national ones as well.
"We want fresh thoughts and perspectives about the elections from places and people not often found in newspapers your neighbors, your favorite cafes and other local hangouts," the application says. "...This is not a soapbox for your political agenda, a training ground for wannabe journalists or a platform for spin. It's a chance to let others know how the campaigns are playing out in your backyard."
From the description, it sounds like The Seattle Times will let the bloggers post unedited, though the paper does add the disclaimer that it "controls all content" and reserves the right to delete any material, which seems pretty reasonable.
