Republicans issue blog credentials

The Republican National Convention has begun issuing credentials to bloggers. At least three bloggers have been credentialed so far: Kevin Aylward of Wizbang; Michele Catalano from A Small Victory and The Command Post; and Scott from Slant Point.

The official letter that was sent to the bloggers said, "For the first time, bloggers will hold an on-site presence at the Republican National Convention called "Bloggers Corner." Positioned near Radio Row, credentialed bloggers will have the opportunity to connect with delegates, guests and other surrogates for interviews, and to provide original content, including multimedia, to their audiences. Through this behind-the-scenes look at the convention's proceedings and events, bloggers will play an important role in telling the story of the 2004 Republican Convention.

"Bloggers Corner will be located in Madison Square Garden's Theater Lobby in the corridor adjacent to Radio Row. Electrical outlets, tabled work stations and necessary hook-ups for laptop and other portable computers will be available for high-speed Internet and Intranet access. Main TV monitors will also be accessible in all convention common areas including Bloggers Corner and will carry closed circuit coverage of all floor activities.

"Bloggers will be credentialed to move about all media areas with access to the Media Center and the news conference center for briefings."

It's interesting that the RNC "invited" bloggers to the convention - they seemed to choose who they wanted. A lot of people who would have loved to apply didn't do so because no "rules" were set up. Obviously the RNC can do whatever they want with regard to this, but the tactic is definitely interesting.

Not true. A ways back, when I was heavily seeking the information while covering convention news (I live in NYC), I found the deadline. It started by applying through the normal press site, where I received an email telling me bloggers would not be considered the same as large media ( (paraphrased), but would get special access. I kept in touch, kept blogging, and they chose me.

Yes, they invited me. Sure there was no obvious and early rules posted, but this stuff moves at the speed of blog. If you had searched around on Google and other blogs, you would have found earlier posts on how to apply.

I sent an e-mail inquiry in June and received a reply that more information would soon come my way. I'm still waiting. The GOP's process was no process unless scouring around looking to see if you had an "in" with any high-level Republican was a process.

The Democrats had an actual process and won the battle here. The GOP blew it.
