NYTimes.com audio panorama
NYTimes.com created several very cool 360-degree interactive panoramic images -- with audio -- from this week's Democratic National Convention in Boston. NYTimes.com took the shots with a special "EventCam" from Kaidan, Inc., which uses ten Canon S60 digital cameras to simultaneously capture a panoramic image.
Users can view the convention floor from multiple perspectives using their mouse, 'stepping' from locaation to location in the 360-degree panoramas.
The idea came about after Chris Ramirez, a freelance photographer for The New York Times, created an interactive panorama photograph of the swearing in of National Security Adviser Condoleezza Rice before the 9/11 Commission in April. The president of Kaidan, Inc., saw the images, met with Ramirez and developed an idea to form a cluster of cameras in a circle, synchronized to shoot with the single squeeze of a remote release.
NYTimes.com agreed to use the device at the upcoming conventions and Canon agreed to help sponsor creation of the prototype head by providing PowerShot S60 cameras. REALVIZ, a French software developer, agreed to assist with the software that creates the panoramic image.
In early July, EventCam was approved by the U.S. Senate Press Gallery for use during the conventions, a requirement due to its unusual appearance.
The Times plans to use the same technology for the upcoming Republican National Convention in New York City.
