Niles named new OJR editor
Award-winning online journalist Robert Niles has been named the new editor of USC Annenberg's Online Journalism Review (www.ojr.org). Niles had been a senior web producer and staff writer for the Los Angeles Times (where he was a regular contributor to the paper's Tech Times and Calendar sections) before he took a recent buyout offer. He's also been the executive producer of the Rocky Mountain News web site and worked for the Omaha World Herald and the Bloomington (IN) Herald Times.
But he's best known in the online news industry for founding and running Theme Park Insider, an online guide to the world's theme parks that won the Online Journalism Award for Service Journalism from the Online News Association in 2001. The site is notable for how well it leverages interactivity and community, and it sounds like Niles plans on tapping what's he's learned there for his work for OJR. "The Internet is giving knowledgeable readers a unique opportunity to connect with and inform others," Niles says. "I'm looking forward to helping OJR bridge the gaps between bloggers, independent web site publishers and traditional journalists, to help improve the quality of news coverage in all media."
