Inside the Imam Ali Mosque
As the standoff with Moktada al-Sadr's militia in Najaf continued, Warzer Jaff, an Iraqi employee in The New York Times's Baghdad bureau, managed to gain access to the Imam Ali mosque in Najaf, one of Shiite Islam's holiest shrines, at 3 a.m. ET (11 a.m. in Baghdad) Thursday.
Later in the day nytimes.com posted a slide show shot by Jaff and exclusive video footage from inside. In this two-minute video, Jaff interviews Sheikh Hazem al-Araji, an aide to Moktada al-Sadr, who says, "If peace is not one of the options, we are ready to fight and ready to protect our city." In the feature, Jaff takes readers behind the lines, into the center of the mosque, to show today's activities, including a funeral procession for two people who were recently killed in the standoff.
