DNC gave Boston.com record traffic
Boston.com not only got one of the biggest traffic boosts of any site after the Democratic National Convention, but it hit record traffic, spokeswoman Kathy J. Park tells CyberJournalist.net.
Photo galleries were an overwhelming favorite for users, representing 24 percent of the site's entire traffic for the month. Wow.
The most popular gallery was the one of pictures of celebrities photographed around town and submitted by Boston.com readers during the DNC. That gallery alone drove two million page views!
If there's any doubt that there's high demand for photos online and photo galleries are worth investing time and money in -- particularly reader photo galleries -- this should put that to rest.
Boston.com's page view total, 135 million, was 4 million more than the previous monthly record, set in March of 2003 when the United States went to war with Iraq. Another way to put it, Park said, is that users spent 714 years, 6 months, 22 days, 7 hours, 38 minutes on the site in a single month. In setting the monthly mark, Boston.com also reached daily traffic milestones: All four days of the DNC ended up among the top 10 busiest of the site's nearly nine-year history.
NYTimes.com also did well during the DNC, Park says:
• During the convention week, traffic to the Washington section peaked on Thursday, July 29 with 1.4 million pageviews, which was 82% higher than the prior eight Thursdays.
• Overall, for the week, daily pageviews in the Washington section were up 77% over the prior two months.
• For the month of July, the Washington section beat out the International section as the second most heavily visited section after Editorial/Op-Ed. Washington is usually third.
• In a year-over-year comparison, Washington section pageviews were up 390% (6.2 million) and cookied visitors were up 240% (1.3 million).
