International Video Reporting Award

For the first time, there is an international award for films made by independent video reporters who work on small digital video cameras and powerful laptops. The International Video Reporting Award is an international competition for short, innovative, non-fiction digital filmmaking. The films must be helmed by a single person who is solely responsible for content, direction, camera, sound and editing, and who fully explores the creative dimensions of digital technology. The filmmaker should also be taking on the challenge of autonomous production and distribution.

"Some call it amatueristic, superficial, dilettantish, and the others call it authentic, democratic, profound," the press release says. "As regarding video-journalism, the jury is still out. Some swear it is documentarianism of the future, whereas others believe it to herald the downfall of true filmic journalism."

The award will be presented at the "backup_festival" in Weimar in October, with a prize of 1,000 euros. So far there have been several hundered registrations, primarily from the USA, Great Britain and eastern Europe. Those interested can submit their films until Sept. 15. Registration forms can be found at www.backup-festival.de.
