Stuffing virtual ballot boxes

Both the Kerry and Bush campaigns e-mailed supporters before the debates urging supporters to visit online news sites and vote for their candidates in post-debate polls. Wired News says CNN.com uses cookies and MSNBC.com uses IP addresses to prevent users from voting multiple times, though FoxNews.com does not block users from repeat voting.

News sites can't stop campaigns from e-mailing supporters to stuff the virtual ballot boxes. But they should attempt to prevent users from voting multiple times and post disclaimers making it clear the online votes are not scientific polls.
