Military.com buys DefenseTech.org

Military.com has purchased DefenseTech.org, a blog founded and written by freelance journalist Noah Shachtman.

Shachtman says it's a lot of work but worth it. "My day job as a freelance writer has been cross-feeding this, too," he tells MarketWatch. "Blogging has opened up a whole new field of contacts to me, generated a lot of story ideas.

"It is a lot of work. You know, the more you put in the more you get out. I'm learning how to do it....

"Frequency is real important. You have to give readers the sense that people can go there anytime and there will be something new. If all you do is throw up links with nothing added to them, I'm not sure that that's a real helpful thing."

He says he thinks blogs are improving journalism. "It's another card in the deck. All these journalistic forms are like haiku -- different lengths, different versions. But the same issues of balance and fairness and accuracy are going to apply.

I also think bloggers are doing a good job of encouraging straight journalists to show transparency, to show how they're getting their information, to show who's actually doing the reporting, what their real biases are. I think bloggers have been real influential in that."
