Backfence.com's local ambitions
Some more details on the Backfence.com citizen journalism project planned for early next year, from Howard Kurtz:
Backfence.com will be launched in two towns in Fairfax County, Va. -- McLean and Reston -- and then, if successful, in 16 other metropolitan areas over the following three years, with 10 town-size sites in each market.
The site, which plans to have a five person staff, is being launched by Mark Potts (a co-founder of washingtonpost.com and the @Home Network) and Susan DeFife (who founded Womenconnect.com, a portal for professional women).
They say the site, which will charge $150 to $200 for ads, will only need a few thousand regular users to become viable.
The site is starting to sound a lot like the Northwest Voice (more on that in this CyberJournalist.net article), with more ambitious national expansion plans.
