Reporter covers Peterson verdict with live text messages

The judge didn't let video cameras in the courtroom for the Scott Peterson sentencing, though KCRA-TV aired a live audio stream of the verdict being read. But there are some things courtroom audio can't capture. Throughout the event, KCRA-TV's Edie Lambert sent text messages that the station aired live on TV in a scrolling text window (she was using AOL Instant Messenger from her laptop, sending them to a computer in the newsroom linked to the live TV feed).

The power of this was made clear as the jurors entered the room -- viewers heard nothing on the audio feed, but found out from Lambert's text messages several tellling details that indicated the decision minutes before it was read:

LIVE TEXT MESSAGE: "Juror eleven winked at sharon rocha" "Foreman looked at sharon rocha as he sat down"
(Rocha is Laci Peterson's mother)

Alas, there was no sign of Lambert's great dispatches on the station's Web site, thekcrachannel.com.
