Podcasting: A new news outlet

As "Podcasting" (downloadable audio programs for the iPod) takes off, it's offering a new potential outlet for news organizations. Among the news organizations already offering Podcasts: several National Public Radio stations (including Minnesota Public Radio and WNYC Radio), Air America, Seattle's KOMO, Boston's WGBH and the BBC. The BBC's feeds are already getting as many as 100,000 downloads, according to digital-lifestyles.info.

With tens of millions of MP3 players out there and hundreds of millions of cell phones with MP3 capability, the potential is great. This form could even evolve into one where news organizations -- print and TV, not just radio -- create audio content that users can download and listen to in their cars on the way to work. Car commuters are a huge market that TV and print publications haven't made many inroads into, and this could be their ticket.

It could well be a revival for radio stations moving into and out of the web. And webloggers, who produce competing content, are those who are challenging news outlets in accuracy and user time spent with news. And the influx of mp3 players is one reason for its potential. Albeit, recording on them is still lackluster in quality. There might be some potential for the new Hi-MD, as many radio journalists use it to record audio. Because podcasting is not only for iPods, as written above - even minidiscs fit in the car stereo.

I have a podcast at my site audioactivism.org. (my podcast feed is www.audioactivism.org/index.xml)
Right now my focus is on Citizen Journalism. I've been creating introductions to podcasting, howtos dedicated to cheap podcasting called 'Citizen Journalist Tech Kits', and very soon interviews with journalists and bloggers.

My goal is to get people making their own media.

We do a podcast for our entertainment magazine InsideOut -- and we have a xml feed for it --

http://www.roanoke.com/multimedia/feeds/iopodcast.xml

it's a lot of fun to do and we have had no trouble at all to get folks to come in to be interviewed -- we've had comedians, rappers and acoustic musicians --

we use a mixing board, minidiscs, and digital editor to jam it out --
