What journalists can learn from bloggers
A good set of tips from Steve Outing, plus some more ideas from across the blogosphere...
Steve Outing offers these suggestions and more on Poynter.org:
Prominently post corrections to errors. ("Perhaps bloggers rank higher when it comes to corrections because they are in more direct touch with their readers. When a blogger makes a mistake, his or her readers make it known; there can be no ignoring it.")
Don't just talk to management and official sources. Bloggers don't have the same access as journalists, so bloggers sometimes get their information from people further inside an organization. "It makes for a different type of storytelling, as new and different voices are heard."
Can the speed of blogging -- made possible by bypassing a rigorous editing process -- be applied to mainstream journalism? ("If that sounds scary to editors, remember than when reporters go on live radio and TV programs, there's no editing there either. It's a matter of trust in the journalist to be given such freedom and responsibility.")
Tim Porter adds 10 more things journalists can learn from bloggers, among them:
Get personal.
Explain why you do things.
Focus. Good blogs have distinct personalities and themes.
Get local, very local.
Give readers access to source material.
Add multiple RSS feeds to your web site.
Add email addresses to your stories.
